RESULTS: Mexican Grand Prix - Qualifying results
Nico Hulkenberg has targeted a strong result in the Mexican Grand Prix after qualifying an eye-catching fifth courtesy a 'mega' lap around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
On a weekend that has seen the German comfortably out-perform local hero and team-mate Sergio Perez, Hulkenberg produced one of his finest qualifying performances of the year to place his Force India VJM09 ffith on the grid.
Ahead of both Ferraris, Hulkenberg is determined to make the most of his lofty starting position having been eliminated on lap one in two of the last three races.
BREAKING POINT: These F1 races really push drivers and cars to the limit
“I think the car just got better and better through qualifying, with the track gripping up. It's not a low downforce track but due to the high altitude it's quite low downforce, track evolution seemed to help the car and pick up the balance and the pace for us. Perhaps we did a good job as well understanding the tyres, getting them into the sweet spot.
“My first lap in Q3 was quite mega, I don't think there was anything more I could squeeze out of there. All in all, just a really good qualifying.
“You've always got to be careful at the start. Every start has a different dynamic so you have to play it by ear, see where the gap is. I think last weekend wasn't great, but it wasn't my mistake. I think it should be fine.”
