The driver who many feel could play a pivotal role in the destination of the 2016 F1 world championship says he just wants 'to have fun' in Abu Dhabi as Max Verstappen concentrates on the threat from Ferrari.
The Red Bull driver ended the second practice session fourth fastest with a best time of 1m 41.389s – half a second off leader Lewis Hamilton – but explained he was held up by traffic at the final corner on his best lap of the day.
Verstappen's running towards the end of FP2 was hampered by technical issues, complaining of a loss of power over the team radio, and says Red Bull will investigate the problem overnight in preparation for qualifying.
The Dutch starlet drew comparisons to Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher for his wet weather racing in Brazil says he is aiming to enjoy his final outing for 2016 as he looks to secure fourth place in the F1 drivers' championship.
“To have fun, that is my target,” Verstappen said. “We are not too far off and of course Ferrari looks pretty strong as well. On my fast lap I had traffic at the last corner so I'm pretty sure we are close so it will be an exciting qualifying tomorrow.
“We are checking now what the exact issue was, that is why we aborted the last run to check. Nothing is broken and I am pretty sure they can solve it for tomorrow but it is better to stop early.”
Verstappen has conceded challenging Mercedes outright at the front will be difficult and is purely focusing on a strong qualifying to give himself the best opportunity to attack at the start of the race.
“There are a lot of factors that will play into that but I think the most important thing for us is to be as close as we can in qualifying to at least race them,” he said. “We have to wait and see, I think they are very strong and in qualifying they turn up their engines as well.”
In the battle for fourth in the F1 drivers' championship Verstappen trails Sebastian Vettel by five points heading into the final race of 2016 at the Yas Marina Circuit.
