That Fernando Alonso himself consider this, 2016, his third best ever year in Formula One says a lot and after a lacklustre previous campaign, which saw him drop to 16th in our end of year poll, the Spaniard definitely seemed to re-discover his mojo.

It didn't start well in Australia, with that horrifying airborne crash putting him out and subsequently forcing him to miss the next race in Bahrain, but after that the two-time F1 World Champion again showed his class.

There were obvious highs in Monaco - when he finished fifth - and in Austin when he repeated the feat, with late moves on Felipe Massa and fellow countryman Carlos Sainz.

There were also points' finishes in Russia, Hungary, Belgium, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil and Abu Dhabi - and in two of those he had to start from the back.

It left him with 54 points on the board at season end, more than double that of team-mate Jenson Button.

Alonso's form in qualifying was also notable, again showing Button the way and beating him 15-5.

Alonso also made Q3 on eight occasions - in Spain, Monaco, Canada, Britain, Hungary, Singapore, Brazil and Abu Dhabi - although it was clear he was continuing to be held back by a car and engine package that while improved, was a long way off his immense talent.
