ON THIS DAY: 2006 – Valentino Rossi matches F1 regulars

Valentino Rossi may have just wrapped up the first 2017 MotoGP pre-season test in Sepang but 11 years ago he was involved in an F1 test and more than held his own against his four-wheel rivals.

The F1 test at Valencia marked Rossi's fourth outing for Ferrari but his first 'real' test – with other teams and drivers on track at the same time – after private tests at Fiorano and Mugello.

It was an embarrassing start the day before when heavy rain delayed track action and Rossi's opener ended within half a lap when he spun and stalled the F2004.

However, the MotoGP star made an impressive comeback on the second day by ending it ninth out of 15 drivers on track, beating the likes of David Coulthard for Red Bull, Mark Webber for Williams and Robert Kubica for BMW-Sauber.

In a truer reflection of Rossi's pace on the day, the Italian's best time of 1m 12.851s placed him within one second of Michael Schumacher – despite the German being in the 2006 Ferrari and Rossi in the older model.
