The Williams team have decided to drop the appeal against Jacques Villeneuve?s disqualification from the Japanese Grand Prix. The announcement came shortly after Max Mosley, president of the FIA, publicly warned the team that if they lost the appeal there was a chance that Villeneuve would be disqualified from the final race of the season in Jerez.
The two points Villeneuve has now lost for his fifth place in Japan, see him enter the final round one point down on Michael Schumacher, clearly giving the Ferrari pilot the advantage. This is a similar situation to that in 1994 where Schumacher was a single point ahead of Damon Hill and seemed to take him out in the race to win. Williams are clearly concerned they might see a replay from Schumacher.
