Johnny Herbert's position at Sauber continues to hang in the balance with confirmation that 1998 team-mate Jean Alesi will stay with the team next season.
The Frenchman issued a 'him or me' threat to the team after the pair clashed at
Silverstone, but Herbert was expected to be retained should Alesi move on. News of the former
Ferrari favourites continuation will come as bad news to the Englishman. Team boss Peter Sauber is reported to be unhappy with Herbert's performances this season, and appears to be in no rush to confirm his second driver for next year.
Sauber did, however, suggest that rumours placing Heinz-Harald Frentzen back at his first team are wide of the mark. (It might not be good for him to come back here,) Sauber said, (After
Williams, any other team is a step down. Maybe he should go to Indycars.)
Herbert, meanwhile, is facing the prospect of not competing in F1 next season. The two times GP winner has admitted to talking to
Williams, Prost and Jordan, but could find doors closing in his face in the coming weeks.
