Monteiro silent on Spyker miss

Having exuded confidence that discussions with the team looked likely to lead to a return to the Formula One grid in 2007, Spyker's decision to name Adrian Sutil alongside Christijan Albers would have been something of a surprise to Tiago Monteiro.

The Portuguese driver was among several being listed as a possible team-mate for Albers, a move which would have reunited the team's 2006 partnership, with the likes of Sutil, Ernesto Viso and, until he signed for Honda, Christian Klien all being tipped for the third driver role. However, Spyker sprung a surprise on the majority of the paddock - Sutil included - by naming the German to the second seat next season.

Monteiro has maintained his silence since the decision was announced on Thursday morning, issuing only a statement promising to give more detail at a later date.

"In response to the high level of interest shown by the media, friends and fans from all over the world as a result of today's press release by Spyker F1 Team, I will soon provide more detailed comments relative to the situation," he said, somewhat cryptically, "I thank all of you for your support and I would like to extend my best wishes for the holidays and the New Year."

Monteiro, who is understood to have substantial backing from his native Portugal - and who had told Crash.net that he had helped establish links between Spyker and companies in Brazil - has also been listed among potential candidates for one of the seats at Scuderia Toro Rosso, despite not having links with Red Bull. It is understood that the Italian outfit is being asked to find additional sponsorship to back up that provided by the drinks brand, and Monteiro's connections may yet play him into contention.
