Webber undergoes surgery

Mark Webber has undergone surgery on a broken right leg following an accident during his own charity event in Tasmania.

The Red Bull Racing driver was airlifted to hospital after a head-on collision with a car during the latest cycling leg of the annual Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge.

Having undergone examinations in hospital, the broken leg now appears to be the only major injury, with Geoff Donohue – the director of the charity event – stating that the 32-year-old was in good spirits.

"The surgery is complete, a pin inserted and the recovery begins," he told the BBC. "Mark's in good spirits. The broken leg is the injury, and beyond that, he's in really good shape.

"He has a little bit of a graze on his left forearm, but he has had full scans and everything else is clear.

"He'll be in hospital for at least three days, for sure under a week. I was speaking to him before the operation, and he was already thinking about his rehabilitation."

Webber is now set to miss the Formula One group test due to be held at Jerez next month but Dononhue said he expected the Australian to make a quick recovery.

"That [Jerez] date obviously will be an issue," he said, "but I suspect that as soon as Mark is able to fly, they will be keen to get him back to Europe.

"They will have people working out his rehab programme now with a view to getting him up and going as soon as possible."
