Esteban Ocon wants to score his first Formula 1 podium finish in tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix, having secured third place on the grid in qualifying for Force India.

Ocon made the most of wet conditions in Q3 to take P5 overall, but will move up to third on the grid after power unit penalties for Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

“A great result, I am really happy with today. It’s what the team deserves,” Ocon said.

“They’ve been working so hard since the beginning of the season so to get this result is something special.

“I am really happy with today, the balance of the car was great, the car was easy to drive. It’s great.

“We managed to put a good lap together, not a perfect lap, I think there was a little bit more was possible.

“A big opportunity ahead of tomorrow. We have to keep our head down to bring that podium.

“I think just choosing the right tyre, choosing the right mode at the right moment [was key]. The team was on it from the beginning until the end. That made the qualifying successful.”

The result came less than a week after Ocon and teammate Sergio Perez clashed in Belgium, costing Force India a decent haul of points and angering its management.

Ocon hopes his qualifying result can lay the foundations for a good run in the race, going some way to make up for the points lost at Spa.

“It’s brilliant. We’ve been losing a lot of points and potentially a good result in Spa,” Ocon said.

“To bring that, it brings back hope. For the team it’s great, hopefully we can bring that tomorrow.”
