Has Button’s dominance made 2009 F1 season boring?

With six victories from the opening seven races of the current Formula 1 campaign, Jenson Button has now equalled a record held by only two other drivers in the history of the top flight – the late Jim Clark and legendary seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Indeed, the Brawn GP star's early-season supremacy has not only earned him a commanding 26-point advantage in the drivers' title chase heading next to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in front of his adoring home supporters – but it is also threatening to turn the championship into something of a one-horse race.

What's more, under commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone's controversial new Olympic Games-style medals proposal, the British ace would now be just two wins away from 2009 glory, less than halfway into the 17 grands prix. That has prompted the Formula One Management (FOM) chief executive to suggest that in the absence of any genuine competition for Button and Brawn, the current situation is 'not great for the spectacle [or] the championship' [see separate story – click here].
