  • Passes Rosberg late on after both Mercedes' hit trouble
  • Hamilton retires with brake issue to lose ground to team-mate in championship
  • Race ends under safety car after huge crash for Perez and Massa

Daniel Ricciardo took his maiden F1 victory by passing Nico Rosberg in the final three laps of a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix.

Having been leading comfortably, both Mercedes cars hit trouble and Rosberg was down on power but holding off Sergio Perez for numerous laps with both Red Bulls and Felipe Massa behind. With Ricciardo passing Perez five laps from the end he then reeled in the ailing Mercedes and passed using DRS to take the win.

The race ended under the safety car as Perez and Massa collided spectacularly at the start of the final lap, with both cars spearing in to the barrier at Turn 1 at high speed. Fortunately, both drivers were able to climb from their cars.

Rosberg finished second ahead of Sebastian Vettel - who just managed to avoid the Perez/Massa crash - while Lewis Hamilton retired with brake trouble two thirds in to the race.

It was a thrilling climax to a race which had been thrown wide open when both Mercedes cars suffered a loss of power on lap 37. Their times in the middle sector immediately dropped off and the two were left to continue their battle for the lead with the rest of the field closing in.

Hamilton had dropped to third place at the start of the race after Rosberg robustly defended at Turn 1 and Vettel nipped through, with the safety car being deployed on the opening lap as the two Marussias collided at Turn 3.

On the restart, Hamilton soon passed the Red Bull and closed to within two seconds of his team-mate. However, when Hamilton got very close Rosberg locked up at the final corner and skipped the chicane, setting the fastest lap and gaining a substantial advantage which earned him a warning.

With the race looking like being another straight fight between the two Mercedes, both lost power and dropped behind Massa after pitting. It was Hamilton who emerged from the stops ahead of Rosberg but then ran wide at the hairpin and again at two chicanes as overheating brakes forced him to retire.

Massa then pitted from the lead having originally been trying to make it to the end of the race, releasing Rosberg ahead of Perez, Ricciardo and Vettel. Rosberg was told the power issue couldn't be resolved but he had enough pace in the first two sectors to pull a large enough gap to negate the time lost on the straights.

The Red Bulls were quick enough to match Rosberg but unable to clear Perez due to the power deficit until the Force India faded in the closing laps, opening the door for Ricciardo who passed at Turn 1 and then jumped Rosberg using DRS.

Starting the final lap, Vettel managed to move in to third but then Massa hit the rear of Perez approaching the braking zone at Turn 1 and both cars hit the wall at very high speed.

Vettel was inches away from being collected in the incident but came home third, while Jenson Button was promoted to fourth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso. Valtteri Bottas faded to seventh as his tyres went off, while Jean-Eric Vergne, Kevin Magnussen and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top ten.
