Vodafone was supposed to take over Marlboro as Ferrari's major sponsor when the ban on tobacco adverts in F1 takes effect. The problem was Marlboro's parent company, Nabisco, had a change of heart come deadline time and opted to continue on with Ferrari. That left Vodafone, with tons of cash burning in their pockets, with nowhere to go but the next best team in F1, hence Vodafone Maclaren.
