Overall he did a lot for bmw motorsport. Was it his choice to help nick we'll never know, but I believe his discipline prevented them from throwing all their effort into the 2008 car to help Robert challenge for the title. It is unfortunate if that is all he is remembered for, as he did more than just F1. Would not be surprised if we see him back in F1 again as that seemed to be his passion from 2006 on. As big as a fan I am of Kubica, BMW was still the #3 car on the grid. He led at the time because of his consistency. Not sure if that would have been enough to win but I guess we will never know.
