There was a time when drivers would regularly take part in several different formulas or series, but I guess there were less GPs in the year in those days, and less PR work. You also had teams entering more than one series too so Mclaren would have its F1 cars in the GPs and its M8A in the Can-Am series, with the drivers flitting between the two.
