The more you spend on the driver the less you have to spend on the car, which is the situation Senna encountered in the later days with Mclaren. Williams always took other approach and spent the money on the car then had their pick of drivers (such as Senna offering to drive for free), which worked a treat until they lost Adrian Newey.
