I doubt there was a clash of personality - Legard didn't have one.
The problem with Legard was he couldn't commentate. All he did was ask questions. Don't ask me what's going on tell me you fool!!!
Then there was the sentances getting louder and louder building up to some excitement, but there never was any excitement. Simple fact - Legard was worse than terrible at commentating on F1 - worse than James Allen, and that takes some beating.
Legard was quite possibly the worst commentator I have ever listened to on any sport.
