You might be talking about Dany Bahar.
And, yes, Proton previously used to rebadge Mitsubishi cars with slight design differences.
They hadn't for a while, until recently they rebadged the Mitsubishi Lancer.
It was purely a business decision as Proton didn't think developing a car for that segment from ground up would be as financially-efficient as rebadging a Mitsubishi car, a company that they have a long history with.
Much like how the Chevrolet Cruze is called Holden Cruze in Australia, except that the Proton rebadge gets a slight design change and a name change too.
