Cutting a chicane to overtake and not handing the position back, for instance, should definitely be punished. In this case, Hamilton leaving the track as such did not give him an advantage, it was no shortcut - quite the opposite really as he picked up a fair bit of dust out there, but he still made it stick so good for him.
