Alonso and Hamilton build upon their own character by building the other up. This is because the two proved to be equals at McLaren in '07. By saying the other is the "greatest," then that implies that they are, themself, equally as "great."
But the truth is that neither of them are "greats" along the lines of Schumacher, Prost, or Lauda.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso haven't done anything "great" since the days when they were gifted the fastest car on the grid. That was the '05-'06 Renault and the '07-'08 Mclaren (which was actually a composite of the Ferrari and McLaren's own research since McLaren stole the blueprints for the Ferrari which they were fined 100m.)
