If I may, the medals system doen't necessarily encourage the best driver, it means that someone fast but inconsistent can win the title by dint of being in the fastest car, leaving a possibly better driver who was more consistent unrewarded for being better over the whole year. The points system is good as it better punishes drivers for having off days. Under the medal system, a driver could be terrible for the majority of the races and still win the title. As well as this, it would actively discourage racing further down the field, as it would mean there was absolutely no point for a title contender to try and make a pass for any position lower than third. It would be cool if F1 could be added to the olympics as a one off event every four years though!
