FM was an erratic driver in his early years, but due to several factors, steadied down and became much more consistent. I put much credit for this down to MS, who mentored him while he was still a Ferrari employee.
His downfall has been, in my opinion, down to several factors happening in close succession. His accident, the loss of MS after he went to Mercedes, and that radio message all hit him in relatively rapid succession and he hasn't been the same since. I think the accident on it's own he could have dealt with. The loss of a mentor too, but then to have his own team tell him to move over was the tipping point.
