Almost everyone who has ever worked with Kimi says he is an excellent test and development driver, works very hard, and is always fast. His negative reputation is largely unfounded, and is based on his distaste for media work etc.
After all, McLaren definitely wanted him back, Lotus is thrilled with his performance, and Ferrari clearly seem interested, and these people seem to know what they are doing. I think it would work this time as Ferrari now have their chosen one, Alonso, and he will dictate much of the focus. Kimi would care less who his teammate is, and could focus on racing.
And, should he really have no interest in Ferrari, the rumour certainly helps his cause when negotiating with Lotus.
