Austin is a very friendly city in general, even as it has tripled in population over the past 30 years or so. Interestingly, the track is southeast of the city in the dullest possible landscape for this area... rolling grass and farmland. Even the main part of the city is not terribly scenic, only if you go west 10-20 miles will people get more of an idea of the beauty of the central Texas hill country... much like parts of Spain or Greece.
As for the track, I'm with BT33 and prefer many of the older tracks, but with the current FIA safety requirements for tracks it's just not possible to create them any more. Let's give it a few years to see how it develops... and maybe in 20-30 years it will start to become one of the "traditional" tracks.
