There are a few differences between Kimi swearing and Vettel swearing to start off. Kimi swore because that's just how he expresses himself- he doesn't care about how he is perceived and its a part of his character. Vettel swore just because Kimi did and that is also part of his character...
Drivers can be characters in other ways than swearing, but in swearing they can reveal some of their character more quickly than they would through an ordinary interview. In this instance it helped to show Kimi's lack of caring for his own image and helped to show Vettel's lack of maturity, which isn't character but a lack thereof.
Interestingly, Alonso seems to have shown this season that his character is something under control- not for the public's consumption. Which in itself is telling.
