You forget that the 3rd drivers, in contrast to the regular drivers, didn't have to save tyres for the race and didn't have to set up the car for the race. Basically they could go out for a glory run all the time. Even some of the other 3rd drivers in much worse teams than BMW Sauber were regularly in the top 5, which was in no way a true reflection of their true pace.
When the real qualifying came, Vettel was P7, 7 tenths off of his teammate (who's not really regarded as the best qualifier ever) on the grid and was lucky to score a point in the race because his teammate retired from a podium position. It's just the facts m8, no need to kid yourself.
