Bit of topic but sounds like your drive might be a bit fragmented. A lot depends on the browser too, Firefox seems to defrag the hard drive despite them claiming otherwise (especially on windows XP).
It's worth clearing your browser cache and then downloading a disk fragmentation tool. Google "smart defrag", it a good tool and free.
Also Chrome is faster than IE and Firefox and worth downloading.
Bit of a stab in the dark but a defragmented disk will affect browser caches as they have lots of small files.
