Melbourne is Australia's 'culture' city. It relies on events and spectacles to lure not only foreign, but also domestic tourism. The truth is they have to spend money to earn it back. There's no beautiful harbour and not as many beaches as Sydney, so they compete in other ways. Having a Grand Prix is one of them. A Ernst & Young report commissioned by Tourism Melbourne entitled "Economic Impact of the 2011 Melbourne Grand Prix" shows that 91.9% of GP attendees were likely to return to Victoria for a future holiday, and 93.6% of attendees were likely to recommend Victoria as a holiday destination to their friends.
