Personally I think that both sides of this issue are pretty strange. First of all you have Pic and vdG who are written off by the majority of F1 media and fans as being too slow (vdG even more than Pic despite being a rookie and being evenly matched with Pic in qualifying) and then some other guys like Chilton and Kova are somehow being talked up while there performances don't back it up. Chilton has so far been on average the best part of a second down on Bianchi in qualifying, but he keeps a (much slower) Caterham behind him, big kudos to him.
Kovalainen got 2 golden chances in F1, didn't manage to take either of them, needed the help of his Russian paydriver teammate to elevate the team over a KERS-less Marussia last year and should thank all his lucky stars that one fine day his teammate suffered a flat tyre and a Ferrari engine blew up 3 laps before the finish so he could take his lucky win and he's regarded as underrated...the mind boggles.
