it would seem the sidewall compression probably has more to do with the weight on any particular corner of a car, and the tire pressure, and lateral loading. Aero is a good way to increase the contact patch and give you more grip at higher speeds.
Unfortunately Pirelli have designed a tire that seems to limit the effective performance of the tire by punishing people who run higher downforce. Guy's like Ferrari who have been having problem with their aero probably welcome the new spec of tire
Red Bull and Mercedes probably got caught out at Barcelona, Lotus, understanding their own 2010 car would have had a clear direction in defining their car for this year, and Alonso, formerly of Renault, and also with a team that has quite a bit of influence in F1. Maybe Kubica + Mercedes can help development, not sure he will really understand the car unless hes actually in it feeling the loading effects tho.
