I guess to put it another way, championships are rarely won by driving cautiously while keeping your eye on the points table. True some drivers fall into championships like that but it's by chance not design. A good example is Lauda in 1984. He wasn't doing just enough to beat Prost by a half point nor plan for Prost to have bad luck. He raced as hard as he could and it just worked out that way.
How about Rindt in 1970. If he had played it safe for points would he have won the title that year?
