I actually watched the top gear show on 'Dave' the other day about Lancias.
Some DD tanks made it ashore which in itself is truly astonishing for its day. Hobarts funnies also made an amazing impact and would have saved many American lives at Omaha had they accepted the option.

The 'in' technology for strength, rigid ness with the light appeal attached. Suffice to say, as I have been censored on here before, we make 'specified' components for several F1 teams.
As for shelf life. If you left a disc in a cupboard of a house, the house will have crumbled away to nothing whilst the disc would still maintain day 1 associated spec.
However, given the use for such technology, high speed, variation in temperature and so on, human error will erode such fail safes.
