I think it's one of those weird things in F1 concerning driver perception that they are now considered to be about equal after two -admittedly- good races by Vergne. Last year Ricciardo was clearly better than Vergne and was unlucky in the races while Vergne had a couple of fluke results. This year the difference might be less pronounced but still I think Ricciardo clearly has more speed.
Vergne is almost like the underdog in that battle that everyone seems to root for and only has to beat Ricciardo a few times to make people take notice while Ricciardo has been beating him all the time...
Same with people still thinking Kovalainen was a great driver...sigh...
