It's OK to "cheat" if Whiting tells you it's OK to do so!! The FIA said asmuch, but has to save face by finding someway of punishing them anyway.
This a spirit of the law vs. letter of the law case. If sport is top of mind, you care about the spirit, but if business, meaning extract EVERY advantage you legally can, then you only care about meeting the letter. It's clear what was most important here. Do you really think any other team on the grid wouldn't have done the same.
