Richard, “the wide boxes” the intercooler/s will have to be in line with the side pots for maximum heat rejection (cooling effect).
Re “engine heat converted to steam to run a steam turbine” that would be called a combined cycle system, not feasible for F1 power unites but very much feasible and in use on big diesel installations in power generation (power stations) where the exhaust gasses heat is used to produce steam to run a turbine which in turn will run a generator.
Some more notes of interest, the ES (energy store/batteries) will be the only part of the power unit that won’t be homologated, the power units consisting of engine ,turbine, compressor, MGUH, and MGUK will all be classified as a power unit and development frozen.
