Knowing what I know about turbocharging, I would say the reason the manifolds look like that is because they are shielded by some sort of insulating material. This would be to keep the heat inside the exhaust flow in order for the MGU-H to be provided with the maximum heat energy to work with. Also glowing header tubing and close fitting modern aero bodywork don't mix. So it would protect them from melting. Also it would protect all the other systems from the heat. That heat is needed to do work in this "MGU-H" I'm starting to see the light. They're going to sound like sh!t, but will be a technical marvel, and one that is useful to modern road technology. No wonder Honda wants back into the sport. We could see the trickle down in the Civic in a few years!
