Rob, teams are given minimum tyre pressure recommendations by the tyre supplier.
Teams tend to abuse this recommended minimum tyre pressure by running tyres at less than the recommended pressure.
The reason/s, an underinflated tyre will heat up faster, the tyre foot print (contact patch) will be bigger, as the race progresses the car will weigh less And less (the difference between start and finish line is about 150kg) so the pressure will get more suited for the load.
But the consequences can turn out to be an overheated tyre which will weaken its structure dramatically.
