Pit reporters add a great deal of value, especially for a market like the US, where they already have limited access to anything.
And the point of insurance is to pay out when damage occurs. And since the pit lane is a dangerous place, insurance companies collect higher premiums. Next they'll ban all mechanics, or have tire changes happen inside the garages...
