With half a season with HRT under his belt, Daniel Ricciardo was widely expected to lead the Toro Rosso charge, but found himself being matched from the off by rookie team-mate Jean Eric Vergne. Other than after his home race, the Australian trailed in the intra-team battle, despite reaching the points positions more often. His highest finish was ninth, which he achieved in Melbourne, Spa, Singapore and Korea, but it was often his qualifying performances that stood out, with sixth on the grid in Bahrain particularly noteworthy. Ricciardo’s results were never enough to warrant consideration as a potential replacement for Mark Webber in the Red Bull team, and he will remain with Toro Rosso for another year in 2013.
