British F3 set for triple-headers

The Cooper Tires British F3 International Series is set to increase the number of races on its schedule for the 2010 season under new proposals announced during the course of the Snetterton race weekend.

The proposals would see British F3 introduce a race day format similar to that seen in the BTCC, featuring three races instead of the current two.

Over the course of a ten meeting season, that would see the title decided over the course of 30 races – an increase compared to this season of some 50 per cent.

"We believe that expanding the number of races in the championship to 30 is a logical extension of the policies which have helped the championship become the pre-eminent 'university of motor sport',” Peter Briggs, spokesman for the British F3 Teams Organisation said. “The cars are reliable and FIA safety-approved, there is a large but controlled testing mileage available, and now three race starts every weekend. British F3 is first and foremost a drivers' series, and the best training there is."

Series promoter Stephane Ratel welcomed the proposal and said he would be working with the team's to make it a reality.

"We were very pleased to discuss FOTA's proposal for a 30-round British Formula 3 season,” he said. “It will be popular with spectators, great for TV and will make for an even more exciting and worthwhile championship, and we look forward to working with FOTA to make the idea come to fruition."
