Recovering Grosjean, Mortara star

While their chances of victory were ruined with incients in the qualifying race that left them starting the final well down the order, Romain Grosjean and Edoardo Mortara still managed to impress many by battling back into the top ten.

Euroseries champion Grosjean had gone into the weekend as one of the favourites to take victory, but could only qualify sixth for the qualifying race. Nonetheless, an incident on the first lap left him requiring a pit stop, the Frenchman eventually crossing the line 22nd.

Nonetheless, the ASM driver embarked on an afternoon of overtaking as he forged his way up the order, Grosjean finishing a satisfying eighth.

“Finishing eighth after starting 21st is not bad at all, is it? At the start, I could already make up quite a few places and my re-start after the safety-car intervention was good as well. The car was very good, although sometimes I struggled a bit in a few corners.”

Grosjean's performance was probably only bettered by that of Mortara, who came to Macau for the first time in an attempt to end his successful maiden F3 season on something of a high.

Qualifying a superb fifth, a mistake on the first lap consigned the Italian to an early retirement in the qualifying race, forcing him to start the final in a lowly 26th. Nonetheless, the youngster battled back to finish in tenth place – 16 places up on where he started.

“Had it not been for my mistake yesterday, I could have had a much better result here, but the great recovery I had finishing tenth after having started 26th is something I am proud of. Sometimes, I overtook three, four drivers a lap. I really enjoyed it!”
