Team West-Tec kicked off its attack on the 2008 Spanish F3 Championship with a full five days of post-season testing at Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo, with two young British hopefuls making a strong impression on the outfit.
With the team's early confirmed signings, Christian Ebbesvik and Sean Petterson, both on duty, the team topped the timesheets consistently – being particularly dominant in wet and damp conditions as Ebbesvik posted the fastest time in full wet conditions by over three seconds. However, it was the first runs of both Jonathan Legris and Matt Hamilton that excited the team.
The pair ran earlier in the week, but still could not avoid the wet conditions. Both, however, impressed in the difficult conditions, which were worse for Hamilton. Legris, meanwhile, had been a scorching fourth quickest overall in the team's ex-Ebbesvik Class B title-winning car a day before.
"It was satisfying to be able to test Jonathan and Matt, who have both caught the eye this year with their performances in junior formulae," commented joint team principal John Miller, "Both worked well with their engineers and our driver coach, Dani Clos, who were all impressed by what they saw.
"Jonathan was very impressive in adapting to the increased demands of driving an F3 car and really stood out in the times. Matt was unlucky to drive on probably the worst and wettest day but, after a couple of minor offs, he got his head down for some sustained rapid lappery towards the end of the day and both showed they clearly have the ability to shine at this level."
With Ebbesvik missing the Friday session in order to get back to his native Bergen in time for Christmas, Petterson led the way for the British-based team, posting the second fastest lap time of the day, despite not being on track when it was at its driest.
Petterson was joined for the final day by experienced British F3 racer Alex Waters, who also impressed and fitted in well with the team, setting consistently quick times despite never having driven at Valencia before.
"Although we did have some dry running, the weather was most unlike typical Spain and we got a lot of wet lappery which inevitably affected the development programmes we were on," joint team principal Gavin Wills admitted, "However, both Sean and Christian showed very well, with Christian being absolutely awesome in the wet, consistently quicker than any of the other Spanish or British F3 cars present and, in some sessions, being over three seconds quicker than the second fastest driver!
"Sean also did a good job, especially coming to the fore on the Friday when he was unlucky to be pipped to the fastest time of the day whilst on a simulated race run. Alex did a good job, being consistently in the top three, as he got to grips with both the circuit and the Spanish-specification A Class Dallara for the first time."
