Meyrick returns to fitness

Andy Meyrick has returned to race fitness as he continues his recovery from the life-threatening illness that curtailed his British F3 International campaign.

The 23-year-old, who spent three weeks in intensive care during the summer, showed his fitness during a test as part of the MSA British Race Elite Scheme.

Meyrick's determined but gradual return to fitness was confirmed by impressive results – including a high VO2max – the ability to perform at a high level for a prolonged period.

"It feels like its been a long road back to recovery, but it was important to build up my level of fitness gradually and not put too much pressure on myself after such a serious illness," Meyrick said. "The good news is that there has been no long term affects and my fitness levels were comparable to the other drivers.

"In some areas, such as my reaction times, my results were better than before my illness. Although I feel fine, it's nice to have proof that I'm back to race fitness. I'll be working hard to improve further over the winter, ready for the 2009 season."

David Brabham, performance director for the Race Elite programme, said he was delighted to see Meyrick back working with the remainder of the group.

"It was really great to see Andrew at the University of Bath with the other MSA British Race Elite drivers last week, as we have all missed him," he said. "Andrew was able to get a good feel for where his fitness is at the moment after being struck down by a terrible virus.

"It was clear to us that he has worked very hard with his training and I think he surprised even himself how strong and fit he actually was. This can only give Andrew a big boost in confidence, and we look forward to him testing an F3 car again in anger."
