FFord winner stars in testing, eyes '09 seat

Wayne Boyd has moved a significant step closer to securing a place on the British Formula 3 grid in 2009 after going quickest in testing at both Rockingham and Donington Park.

Boyd, who dominated the Formula Ford UK Championship this year, was on track for T-Sport alongside a series of current drivers and fellow F3 hopefuls, including Formula Renault Eurocup standout Daniel Ricciardo, Victor Garcia and Oli Oakes,

Nonetheless, the BRDC Superstar and McLaren Autosport Young Driver nominee was able beat all-comers at both circuits, a performance he was delighted with, not least because he is confident he can go quicker.

"I'm really happy” said Boyd, “F3 has been a steep learning curve and I've still got so much to learn, but with the team's help I'm getting better and better, day by day. It's been great working with T-Sport. Skelly, Russell and the rest of the guys have been absolutely brilliant. I'm learning so much from them all. Most importantly, I really feel I can go faster."

"It's been fantastic - I'm really pleased with both days of testing. The conditions were really difficult today – it was so cold and windy and there was so much traffic. It wasn't easy to get the tyres up to temperature, but we managed to be patient and learn the circuit. By mid afternoon we were setting good, competitive times and with help from the team, calling the traffic, I managed to put a really good lap together.

Boyd is now setting his sights on a race seat in Formula 3 next year, possibly with this year's title contenders T-Sport, who recently announced a deal to run Volkswagen engines in 2009.

“The team were very happy and that's the main thing. I need to convince them that I can do a good job and I think I am doing that. We have some more testing planned over the next two weeks and then, hopefully, we can get down to the business side of things and confirm a deal for next year. I can't wait.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has helped me in both Formula Ford and F3 this year. I can't believe how much has happened - and I've still got this Sunday's Autosport Awards to look forward to. Fingers crossed!"
