Hohenthal inks F2 deal

After ending his time in the British F3 International Series early in order to focus on the 2009 season, Sebastian Hohenthal has now revealed that he will contest the new Formula Two championship next year.

After two years in the British F3 series, Hohenthal becomes the latest name to sign-up for F2, which will make a return to the motorsport scene next season after the name was resurrected by the FIA.

"I'm delighted to be joining Formula Two in 2009," Hohenthal admitted. "For me the new F2 championship couldn't have been any better timed and with Williams being involved in the project, there is no doubt that the cars will be fantastic as well.

"F2 has a proud history and next year we will race at great circuits with strong competition. I look up to drivers like Ronnie Peterson, who became something of a national hero when he graduated to Formula One having won the Formula Two Championship in 1971. It has been a long time since Sweden has had a driver in F1, but hopefully I can end the wait.

"I have a lot of belief in the car, the management and the talent of the other drivers, people like Robert Wickens and Julien Jousse. I'm really excited to be in a championship that will be brilliant preparation for Formula One."

Jonathan Palmer, CEO of championship organisers MSV, was quick to welcome Hohenthal into the series and said he was confident he would be a success.

"I'm really delighted to welcome Sebastian to Formula Two," he said. "F2 is the perfect environment for talented drivers like Sebastian, who may have struggled to raise the substantial budget required to compete in other series.

"Having enjoyed racing against my good friend Stefan Johansson back in the 1982 F2 series, I'm also delighted that Sweden once again has a great F1 prospect in Formula Two."
