Macleod joins West-Tec for Spanish F3

Team West-Tec has revealed the first signing for its 2009 Spanish F3 line-up, with former Formula Ford ace Callum Macleod set to drive a 2006-spec Dallara for the Corby-based team.

The 21-year old Scot was the runaway UK Formula Ford champion in 2007, but only managed a couple of outings in the category's historic arm last year, taking a vintage Merlyn to victories at Silverstone and Brands Hatch amid a handful of F3 races, including a debut outing in the then untried Litespeed car at Snetterton and a last-minute one-off with T-Sport's National Class car at Donington - when he set fastest lap of race two.

Macleod's West-Tec entry will be run in association with Mike O'Brien's Silverstone-based Speedsport concern, former double winners of the British Grand Prix F3 support race with Darren Manning, and the owners of the Merlyn the youngster campaigned with such aplomb in 2008.

''With a very tight budget in place thanks to a small group of long time Speedsport supporters, it was decided that the car would be prepared at our premises, and that we would link up with Team West-Tec for testing and racing purposes,'' O'Brien revealed, ''They have two years' successful experience in Spanish F3 and, in Gavin Wills and Paul South, a very solid engineering base which we can benefit from. Early tests indicate that this is going to be a very fruitful and enjoyable partnership.''

Macleod was naturally delighted to have secured an F3 deal, and has already been in action with the West-Tec/Speedsport combination.

''F3 is where I've wanted to be since I won the FFord championship,'' he pointed out, ''I am really pleased to have this deal which enables Mike and the Speedsport team to combine their strengths and understanding of my requirements with the expertise of Team West-Tec in this championship. Testing is going well, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete on some of the best circuits in the world this season.''

West-Tec has stamped its mark on the strengthening Spanish F3 series in two years of involvement, with Thor-Christian Ebbesvik and Jonathan Legris leading the team's challenge in 2008.

''We have now raced in Spain for two seasons, during which time we have taken one championship, won twelve races and taken 30 podiums,'' co-principal John Miller confirmed, In 2009 we are determined we will be fighting for both the drivers' and teams' championships, and Callum is going to be a very important part of that.

''He should be a very good signing for us, as he is a quality driver with an excellent pedigree. I look forward to seeing him on the top step of the podium.''
