Tandy pleased with double podium

16 April 2009

Nick Tandy was pleased to underline his British F3 International Series championship credentials with a brace of podium finishes during the opening rounds of the campaign at Oulton Park.

Tandy, continuing to campaign the JTR Mygale-Mercedes, had been on the pace throughout pre-season testing, although he admitted to struggling during qualifying to match the pace of the top three runners.

From the second row of the grid however, Tandy was able to finish second behind Daniel Ricciardo in race one – setting a new lap record in the process – and then finished third behind Ricciardo and Walter Grubmuller in race two.

However, while pleased with a double podium, Tandy admitted to being slightly disappointed to lose points to Carlin ace Ricciardo over the course of the weekend.

“We were struggling for pace a bit in qualifying but we knew our race pace would be good,” he told Crash.net. “Its two podiums and lots of points, but the only trouble is that the main competition has gone out and won both races. We came here last year and had a shocking start, but a second and third from fourth on the grid this time – along with a lap record – is a good start.”

Tandy admitted that the pace during the weekend had been 'what he expected' although he vowed to now push hard to secure a maiden win.

“It's no more than we expected,” he said. “We finished last year well and haven't stopped working. We haven't been on track much [during the off-season] but we knew the car would be better and it was just a case of how much better.

“We have been on the pace and we know now that things are close at the top for race wins. However, it looks like there will be one person to beat for the title.”
