Euro: Bottas takes maiden pole

Valtteri Bottas stormed to a dominant pole position for the F3 Euroseries weekend at Lausitz, securing his maiden pole in the process.

The ART rookie produced an impressive performance in wet conditions at the German venue to post a quickest time of 1min 31.308secs, putting him almost half a second clear of second placed Jules Bianchi.

“Great, my maiden pole position in Formula 3,” he said. “It was clear that I would make it one day, but I didn't quite expect it already in my second F3-qualifying ever. Weather conditions weren't easy, the ideal line changed all the time.”

Behind Bianchi, Atte Mustonen was a solid third for the new Motopark Academy team and will share row two with Jean-Karl Vernay, with rookie driver Cesar Ramos in fifth and Henkie Waldschmidt rounding out the top six.

The session itself had to be stopped on two occasions, with the first stoppage coming after rookie driver Johan Jokinen – making his Euroseries debut this weekend with Kolles & Heinz Union, suffered a spin. He starts down in 26th place as a result.

The second stoppage saw Mika Maki lose control of his Signature Dallara-VW and spin into the pitwall. The title hopeful had failed to set a representative time when the incident occurred and will start at the back of the field as a result.
