While the F3 Euroseries took a week off, and the British Championship ventured to Hockenheim for the first of three 'awaydays' this season, the German, Italian and rebranded Euro F3 Open series all staged rounds at the weekend.

Germany's ATS Formel 3 Cup completed its third meeting of the season, joining the British series at Hockenheim for another double-header weekend, and , once again, it was Belgium's Laurens Vanthoor to the fore. The van Amersfoort Racing driver has now won half of the six races held to date, and has two second places in addition to those successes, giving him a seven-point championship lead over team-mate Stef Dusseldorp.

Having failed to take advantage of a front row start in race one - '[Nico] Monien appeared from nowhere, having made a jump-start, and took the lead. I tried to catch him – even though he wasn't meant to be there, but I hit a rough patch and slid off for a moment' - Vanthoor bounced back on Sunday afternoon to dominate proceedings on a damp track.

“As the race was cut short due to a rainstorm, I had a relatively easy finish," he admitted, "Scoring a second and first place here in Hockenheim was a good weekend, but it still wasn't perfect. I'm really looking for that perfect weekend where everything slots into place as hoped for.”

Dusseldorp and Rahel Frey sandwiched Vanthoor on the race one podium, with the Belgian being chased home by his team-mate and Monien second time around.

At Magione, victories in the Italian national series were shared between Daniels Campos-Hull and Zampieri after the latter had secured pole in qualifying on Friday.

Prema's Campos-Hull seized the lead of race one right from the start and kept it authoritatively until the chequered flag while, behind him, Sergio Campana (Lucidi Motors) and Pablo Sanchez Lopez (Alan Racing Team) battled over the lower reaches of the podium. Poleman Zampieri had to content himself with sixth place, after a poor getaway relegated him initially to fourth and then a last lap excursion onto the grass dropped him another couple of spots.

Ironically, that error ensured that Zampieri would start race two from pole as well, courtesy of the top six finishers being inverted, and he made no mistake second time around, despite the race being affected by intermittent rain. With potential rival Pablo Sanchez-Lopez hit by an electrical problem that saw stall on the grid, and indecision among those who opted to change to wets once the rain started, Zampieri was able to claim his second win of the year, ahead of Campana and Marco Zipoli (Team Ghinzani).

After allowing Capos-Hull temporary custody of top spot, Zampieri returned to the head of the overall standings with 49 points, followed by Campos-Hull on 47, Campana (46) and Zipoli (38).
