Euro: Vietoris inherits at Oschersleben

Mucke Motorsport's Christian Vietoris has won the second F3 Euro Series race at Oschersleben after 21 of the 23 finishers were handed a post-race 30 second time penalty.

Vietoris and Renger van der Zande were the only two drivers that were judged to have slowed correctly during a yellow flag period following Christopher Zanella's accident on lap 2. As a result, Vietoris was bumped up the order at the end, while Stefano Coletti, who crossed the finish line in first, had to settle for the runners-up spot.

As a result of his 'win' - his third of the season - Vietoris now closes back up on Jules Bianchi in the battle for the 2009 F3 Euro Series drivers' crown, with 18 points separating them.

"I am happy with the six points for this victory," said Vietoris. "When the other drivers were too fast under yellow, the time penalty is justified. After all, yellow flags are not being shown just for fun, but to guarantee safety for the marshals who are working on a car that is stuck."

Meanwhile Coletti, who got ahead of pole man Mika Maki at the start and then pulled away, felt that the penalty was harsh.

"I didn't improve in the first sector while yellow flags were being waved there. It could be that my lap times were partly faster. However, that wasn't due to the first sector, but to the other two. I am totally disappointed," explained the Prema Powerteam man.

Maki was slightly happier with what was eventually third: "The weekend wasn't very good for us. Even though I made it up onto the podium, it wasn't great. I had to fight with my car throughout the race to keep it on track. Still, I scored my first rostrum finish of the year. I hope that the second half of the season will be better."

Of the rest, Alex Sims was classified fourth, followed by Manor's Roberto Mehri and F3 Euro Series points' leader, Jules Bianchi. Jean-Karl Vernay and Valtteri Bottas were seventh and eighth, whilst Esteban Gutierrez and Henkie Waldschmidt completed the top ten.
