Formula Renault front-runner James Calado has inked a deal to join Carlin for the 2010 British F3 International Series season.

The 20-year-old, who is backed by the Racing Steps Foundation, will make his debut in F3 next season and will follow in the footsteps of fellow RSF driver Oliver Turvey, who raced for Carlin in 2008

Calado enjoyed a stunning season in Formula Renault in 2009, taking twelve podium finishes - including eight race wins – to finish second in the championship standings behind Dean Smith.

“I'm so excited to be with Carlin in British F3 for next year,” he said. “British F3 is a fantastic championship and has proven time and time again to be a great feeder series and Carlin is clearly the team to beat. I'd like to thank the Racing Steps Foundation for their continued support and for such a great opportunity in 2010.

“I've spent a few days testing in the F3 car and the downforce and grip is just amazing. It's great that my drive for next season has been secured so early as I can really start to concentrate on winter testing so I'm fully prepared for the new season. I can't wait for the racing to get underway!”

Team Principal Trevor Carlin said he was confident that Calado will be amongst the pacesetters in 2010 following an impressive performance in testing.

“We are delighted to welcome James into the British F3 team and very proud that the Racing Steps Foundation have entrusted us with another of their up and coming drivers for 2010,” he said. “James has driven brilliantly in Formula Renault this year based on his performance in F3 testing with us, I'm sure that he will make a big impact in his first season in F3.”
